Skin botox uses diluted botulinum toxin (commonly called Botox), injected in very small amounts at multiple points in the superficial layers of the skin. Unlike conventional Botox, which reduces muscle movement, it acts on oil glands, sweat glands and small muscles near the skin with the aim of reducing shine, prominent pores and fine lines. At VEI Clinic, we assess your skin before choosing the dose and injection sites.
After numbing cream has had time to work, small amounts are injected into the shallow layer of the skin at many points with a fine needle. The sites, depth and dose are decided after assessing your skin.
The injections themselves usually take about 20 minutes, and they can be planned together with a skin booster if needed.
Changes usually appear over 1 to 2 weeks after treatment, last for a few months and then gradually fade. Results vary from person to person. This is not a treatment for deep wrinkles or lifting sagging skin, so we discuss other options for those concerns.
Needle marks, small bruises and swelling can appear and usually settle within a few days. Rarely, a drooping eyelid, an uneven expression or discomfort when smiling can occur, so we use lower doses where many expression muscles lie. In very rare cases, difficulty swallowing or breathing can occur; if so, seek emergency care right away.
We do not perform this procedure during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in people with neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis. Please tell us in advance if you take antibiotics or blood-thinning medication.
