VEI IV · Arginine

Supplementing an amino acid:
arginine IV

An arginine IV delivers L-arginine, an amino acid, through an IV. Arginine is used to make nitric oxide, which widens blood vessels, and is also involved in protein metabolism. Many people seek it for support while exercising or dieting, but it has not been proven to reduce body fat. At VEI Clinic, we also discuss diet and daily habits.

VEI Clinic, Gangnam — VEI IV · Arginine

What Is Arginine?

Arginine is an amino acid that the body can make and that is also found in foods such as meat, fish, beans and nuts. It helps widen blood vessels as a building block of nitric oxide and is also involved in processing ammonia.

Unlike oral arginine supplements, an IV goes directly into a vein, allowing precise control of the amount given. However, evidence that arginine IVs improve exercise performance or lead to weight loss is insufficient.

Why People Ask for It

There is not enough evidence to recommend arginine IVs for everyday wellness. Many people ask for them for the reasons below, so we first check your health and whether an IV is needed. If weight management is your goal, we also suggest a Medical Weight Consultation.

  • People who are eating too little during periods of heavy exercise and want to discuss fluid and nutrient support
  • People who feel run-down while reducing their food intake to lose weight
  • People whose stomachs are upset by oral supplements

Precautions and Safety

We give the IV slowly because a fast infusion can cause flushing, nausea or a headache. It can lower blood pressure, so please tell us in advance if you take blood pressure medication or medication for erectile dysfunction.

Arginine is not given if you are or may be pregnant, have had a heart attack, or have reacted to it before. Tell us first if you have kidney or liver disease, low blood pressure or high potassium, frequent herpes outbreaks, or are breastfeeding.

What to Expect

  • History: your goals, exercise, diet, current medications and medical conditions
  • Exam: vital signs such as blood pressure, with kidney function tests if needed
  • IV session: given in a private room with the rate adjusted as needed
  • Before you leave: advice to contact us right away if you feel dizzy or have palpitations

The VEI Clinic Approach

An internal medicine specialist decides after a consultation whether you should have the IV and what goes in it. How often is based on your health and actual need rather than on how you feel alone, and if you have a cold or fever, wait until it settles.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Will an arginine IV help me lose weight?

There is no evidence that an arginine IV alone reduces body fat. If weight management is your goal, we discuss a diet and exercise plan and, if needed, obesity treatment.

How does it differ from oral arginine?

An IV goes straight into a vein so the dose can be set precisely, but it can still cause discomfort such as nausea. The route alone does not make it gentler or more effective than arginine taken by mouth.

Does it help before exercise?

Studies on improving exercise performance are inconsistent, so we do not specifically recommend it before exercise. For energy during training, we start with your meals and fluid intake.

Can I have it while taking blood pressure medication?

Your blood pressure could fall further, so we review your medications before deciding whether to proceed and what infusion rate to use.
