Headache care IV:

This IV is considered for people with a history of migraine who are struggling with headache, nausea and sensitivity to light or sound. We first make sure it is not an emergency, and an internal medicine specialist then decides what the IV should contain for hydration and symptom relief.
What's in the IV
The contents depend on your consultation, and not every component is used every time.

Headaches That Need the ER Right Away
If you have any of the following, you need emergency care rather than an IV visit.
- A sudden, explosive headache unlike any you have had before
- Weakness in the arms or legs, slurred speech, numbness on one side, vision problems or confusion
- Fever with a stiff neck, or a headache after a head injury
- A new headache that starts after age 50
- A severe headache, vision changes or high blood pressure during pregnancy or after giving birth
How a Visit Works
- History: symptoms, triggers, aura, medications already taken and allergies
- Exam: vital signs, with simple tests if needed
- Explanation and consent: suitability and IV contents
- IV: about 30 to 60 minutes in a private room
- Before you leave: self-care advice, with prescriptions or referrals if needed
Precautions and Daily Care
Please tell us about any heart, kidney or liver disease, pregnancy, G6PD deficiency or glaucoma, and about every medication you take, including blood thinners. You may notice a bruise at the injection site, a brief chill or flush, or a metallic taste.
- Keep up fluids and eat a light meal
- Keep your bedtime and wake time consistent
- Keep a record of triggers such as alcohol, skipped meals, strong scents and screen use
- Talk with us in advance about your usual headache medication and when to come in
The VEI Clinic Approach
An internal medicine specialist reviews the pattern of your headaches and decides whether an IV is suitable. If your headaches keep coming back, we also discuss whether preventive treatment or care from another specialty is needed. Results can differ from person to person, and the specialist decides on suitability after your consultation.

No. We decide individually, based on your history and what is safe for you.
