Allergic rhinitis occurs when the nasal lining reacts excessively to substances such as pollen, dust mites or animal hair, causing repeated sneezing, clear nasal discharge, congestion and an itchy nose. At VEI Clinic, we review your symptoms and living environment, with medication as the basis of treatment. For symptoms that are difficult to control with medication or recur each season, we discuss allergy injections containing immunoglobulin.
A cold usually improves in about a week and may come with fever or body aches. Allergic rhinitis causes sneezing, clear nasal discharge and itching of the nose and eyes without fever. These symptoms may last for weeks or recur in certain seasons or places.
These injections combine human immunoglobulin and histamine, with the aim of reducing the body's excessive response to histamine. They are usually given under the skin once or twice a week, with progress reviewed after several injections.
Responses vary widely, and the injections do not help everyone. We discuss them with people who want to reduce their medication use or whose symptoms become severe each season before proceeding.
Because it contains an ingredient from human blood, tell us if you have ever reacted to this injection or to immunoglobulin. It is not given during a severe asthma attack, just before or during a menstrual period, if you are or may be pregnant, or if you are severely weakened.
Swelling or itching at the injection site can occur, and a severe allergic reaction such as shock is possible in rare cases, so we observe you briefly after each shot. Because it is made from human blood, the risk of infection or blood clots cannot be ruled out completely. Seek emergency care right away if you become short of breath, have chest pain, or notice pain and swelling in one arm or leg.
An internal medicine specialist first listens to your symptoms and reviews your living environment. If medication can control your symptoms, we use it first. Before allergy injections, we explain why they may be needed and their limitations. If we suspect a structural nasal problem or sinusitis, we recommend ear, nose and throat care.
