This IV replenishes fluids and nutrients when you are eating less or feel low on energy after an outpatient procedure such as dental, dermatology or cosmetic treatment. Instructions from the clinic that performed your procedure come first, and an internal medicine specialist checks your condition before deciding what goes in it.
What's in the IV
This IV is not a treatment that reduces swelling or bruising at the procedure site. It is a supportive measure for when you are low on fluids and nutrients, and the contents are set individually after your consultation.
- A base IV fluid and electrolytes
- Nutrients such as B vitamins, vitamin C, glutathione or amino acids when suitable
- Anti-nausea medication that does not conflict with your post-procedure medications
What to Bring
- The discharge instructions and precautions from the clinic that performed your procedure
- A list of your medications (pain relievers, antibiotics, supplements) and allergies
- Your procedure date and current symptoms
How a Visit Works
- History: procedure details, medications, allergies and symptoms
- Exam: vital signs, with simple tests if needed
- Explanation and consent: suitability and IV contents
- IV: about 30 to 60 minutes in a private room
- Before you leave: aftercare advice, with follow-up or referrals if needed
Precautions and Safety
If you have heavy bleeding, fever with chills, pain that keeps getting worse, shortness of breath, chest pain, persistent vomiting, new weakness or numbness, or a wound that quickly becomes red, swollen or starts to ooze pus, contact the clinic that performed your procedure or the emergency room first.
Please tell us if you have kidney, heart or liver disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, G6PD deficiency or a history of blood clots, or if you take blood thinners or diuretics. We do not use medications that conflict with your post-procedure restrictions, and when in doubt we follow your procedure clinic's plan. You may notice a bruise at the injection site, a brief chill or a metallic taste.
- Sip water or oral rehydration solution throughout the day
- Eat light meals that include protein and vegetables
- Care for your wound exactly as your procedure clinic instructed
- Keep your scheduled follow-up visits
The VEI Clinic Approach
An internal medicine specialist reviews your procedure and current condition and then decides whether an IV is needed. You can rest quietly in a private room during the IV. Results can differ from person to person, and the specialist decides on suitability after your consultation.

Will swelling or bruising go down faster?
Hydration may help with how you feel, but swelling and bruising follow the natural course of each procedure.
Do I need to rest after the IV?
Most people can manage light daily activities. If you feel dizzy, rest and avoid driving.
