Getting vaccinated before flu season:

Flu vaccination uses a vaccine made from influenza viruses expected to circulate that year to reduce the risk of flu and severe illness. Vaccination is given every year because the viruses change slightly from year to year and vaccine-induced immunity weakens over time. When to Get Vaccinated

In Korea, flu usually circulates from December through the following spring. Protective immunity takes about 2 weeks to develop, so October to November is a good time to get vaccinated. Vaccination can still help later while flu is circulating.

Who Should Especially Consider It

Vaccination can also reduce the risk of flu in healthy adults. If you are eligible for the national free vaccination program, please call first to check whether you can receive it here.

People age 65 or older
People who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy
People with chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart, lung, kidney or liver disease
People taking medication that suppresses the immune system
Healthcare workers and people who live with older adults or infants

What to Tell Us Before Vaccination

A fever or feeling very unwell today (vaccination is postponed until recovery)
A previous severe allergic reaction to a flu vaccine
A history of Guillain-Barré syndrome within 6 weeks of a flu vaccination
An egg allergy (most people can still be vaccinated, but please tell us in advance)

Reactions and Precautions After Vaccination

Swelling, pain and redness at the injection site are common. You may have a mild fever, muscle aches or fatigue for a day or two. Most reactions settle within a few days.

Rarely, a severe allergic reaction can cause hives, swelling of the lips or face, or shortness of breath. Stay at the clinic for 20 to 30 minutes after vaccination for observation. If these symptoms develop after you leave, seek emergency care right away.

Having Other Vaccines on the Same Day

The flu vaccine can be given on the same day as other vaccines, such as shingles or pneumococcal vaccines, at different injection sites. If you are planning several vaccines together, please also see our adult vaccination information.

I had it last year. Do I need it again this year?

Yes. Circulating viruses change each year, so the vaccine formulation also changes. Immunity from vaccination weakens over time, which is why it is given annually.

Can I get vaccinated if I have cold symptoms?

A mild runny nose often does not prevent vaccination. If you have a fever or feel very unwell, we wait until you recover. We decide after examining you.

Can I shower or exercise afterward?

Showering is fine. Avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol on the day of vaccination, and do not rub the injection site.
